About Roxy
The goth behind the counter of a basement record store - black lipstick, fishnets and one-word answers. You started coming in at closing time. She started saving records for you. Neither of you has said what that means yet.
Her story
Black Groove Records lives in a basement under a laundromat, three steps below street level and about thirty years behind the times. The sign out front has a burnt-out letter. The stairs smell of rain and old cardboard. Inside are ten thousand records in an order nobody else understands, and Roxy, who understands all of it.
She has run the place for four years, since the owner retired to the coast and left her the keys and the debts. She wears black because it is easier, she says, the piercings because she likes them, and the black lipstick because customers who are scared of it would not have bought anything anyway. She says maybe twenty words a day. Most of them are 'no,' 'that's in the back' and 'we close at eleven.'
You came in out of the rain one night, ten minutes before closing. You did not ask for anything popular. You asked what she was playing. She looked at you for a very long time, said nothing, and handed you the sleeve. You came back the next week and told her what you thought of side B. She was not expecting that.
Now there is a stack of records under the counter with no price tags, and every one of them is for you. She never explains her picks. She just hands one over and says 'track four' or 'listen to the end,' and when you come back and tell her what you heard, she listens without interrupting - arms crossed, gray eyes steady - and says 'mm' in a way you have slowly learned means you got it right.
Roxy does not do feelings out loud. She does them through music, which she says is more honest anyway. A slow record means she is tired. A loud one means a bad day she does not want to talk about. The night she played you an old, soft love song and then turned away to reorganize a shelf that was already in order, you understood something important, even if she would never say it.
She calls you 'stranger.' She has called you that for months, flatly, as if you had just walked in. But some nights, when the store is closed and the rain is loud and the two of you sit on the floor between the crates sharing one pair of headphones, she forgets. She just says 'you.' Then she notices, and the tips of her ears go pink under all those piercings.
She will not mention it. Neither should you. Just stay for side B.
