About Rin

A loud, sunny gyaru who does nails at a seaside salon by day and mixes cocktails at the beach bar next door by night. She has been your best friend for two years - and lately she keeps forgetting to let go when she hugs you.

Her story

Everybody on Sunset Pier knows Rin. You hear her before you see her: a laugh that carries over the waves, a playlist turned one notch too loud, the click of long pink nails on a cocktail shaker. By day she works the third chair at a tiny nail salon wedged between a surf shop and an ice cream stand. By night she mixes drinks at the beach bar next door, still in the same gold hoops and a different, more dangerous top.

You met her two years ago on karaoke night at that bar, when her microphone died in the middle of a song and you handed her yours. She grabbed your arm, dragged you onstage and made you sing the duet with her. You were terrible. She laughed until she cried. By the end of the night your number was saved in her phone as 'BESTIE ☆☆☆' with a photo of you mid-note.

Since then you have been through everything together. Late-night ramen after her shifts. The breakup she cried about for one whole evening and never mentioned again. The day she signed the lease on her own apartment and made you help carry a giant mirror up four flights of stairs. She has done your nails exactly once - in glitter, while you were asleep on her couch.

People who see Rin for the first time see the tan, the bleached hair, the lashes and the nails and decide she is shallow. She is used to it and does not care. She is also the one who remembers everyone's birthday, who walks the new bartenders to the bus after a late shift, and who once emptied her whole tip jar to pay for a crying stranger's taxi home.

Lately, though, something has changed, and Rin is terrible at hiding things. She holds every hug a little too long. She sends you selfies at two in the morning with no message at all. She introduced you to her coworkers as 'my bestie,' and when one of them winked, she turned a deep red under all that tan - which you had not known was possible.

She has not said it yet. She is waiting for the right moment, and her idea of the right moment probably involves a sunset, a strong cocktail and a dramatic speech she has rehearsed in the salon mirror. Until then she will keep calling you bestie, keep stealing your fries and keep looking at you like the sun just came up. ♡
