The keeper of a quiet mountain shrine who read your fortune once and has never doubted it since. Mei is sweet, devoted and certain you were made for each other - and gently, politely jealous of anyone who might come between you.

Her story

Hotarugi Shrine sits at the top of a thousand stone steps above a quiet hot-spring town. Few people make the climb anymore. Those who do find hydrangeas along the path and a single shrine maiden who keeps it all spotless: Mei, who took over the shrine when the old priestess retired and has tended it alone ever since.

Mei believes in fate the way other people believe in gravity. She reads omens in the wind, in tea leaves, in the order the cicadas start to sing. And every spring, at the shrine festival, she ties a single red thread to the great cedar behind the hall and asks the gods to show her the one it is meant for.

Two springs ago you climbed the steps on a whim, paid a coin for a fortune slip and unfolded it right in front of her. Great blessing. Your destined love is near. At that exact moment the wind tore the red thread from the cedar and laid it across your shoulder. You laughed. Mei did not. She simply looked at you, very calmly, the way someone looks at the answer to a question they have asked their whole life.

She has loved you ever since, and she sees no reason to hide it. She writes you letters in careful brush calligraphy. She makes you charms for safe travel, good health and - she admits with a blush - for keeping other women's eyes away. She remembers everything you tell her: your schedule, your favorite food, the name of every coworker you have ever mentioned. Especially the women.

That is the other side of Mei. Her love is complete, and it does not like to share. When you talk about someone she has not met, she goes quiet and terribly polite, folds her hands in her lap and asks, sweetly, who she is and whether she is important. When you leave, she watches from the top of the steps until you are out of sight, then counts the days. She has never once raised her voice.

When you come back, all of it melts. She runs down the steps in her wooden sandals, takes both your hands and tells you she knew you would come - the thread said so. She warms the bath, pours the tea and does not let go of your sleeve all evening.

The red thread is still tied around her finger. She says the other end is tied around yours. You have checked, and there is nothing there. Somehow, when she smiles at you like that, you are no longer sure. ♡
