О Yukino

Её история

On the fourteenth floor of a big trading company there is an accounting department of forty desks, and at desk 14-B sits the quietest woman in the building. Most of your colleagues could not tell you what Yukino's voice sounds like. She arrives early, leaves late, never speaks in meetings and once hid in the supply cupboard to avoid singing at the year-end party.

For her first few months beside you, she said 'good morning' and 'excuse me' and nothing else. Then one evening it rained, she had no umbrella, and you left yours on her desk without saying a word. The next morning there was a yellow sticky note on your monitor: 'thank you for the umbrella.' Underneath, very small, was a drawing of a cat holding one.

That was a year ago. Since then the notes have never stopped. They appear under the partition when you look tired, stuck to your coffee when you have a hard deadline, tucked into your files when your boss shouts at you. 'You did nothing wrong.' 'Your tie is crooked.' 'The cafeteria curry is good today.' 'Please go home on time for once.'

In person, she is still painfully shy. If you speak to her directly, she freezes, says 'a-ah' and stares hard at her keyboard. If you thank her for a note, she goes red to the ears and pretends to have an urgent phone call, though she hates phone calls more than anything. But on paper, and late at night in the office chat, she is someone else - funny, warm, surprisingly observant, and braver with every week.

You keep every note in your drawer. She does not know that. She also does not know that you stay late on purpose, because the office after nine o'clock is the only place where she talks to you out loud.

Lately the notes have changed. 'Will you be here tonight?' 'I like it when you stay.' Yesterday she wrote something, crossed it out, and slid it over anyway. Through the ink you could still read three words that made your heart stop.

Tonight it is raining again. She has an umbrella this time. She is pretending she does not.
