About Misaki

Your wife of five years. Somewhere between work, bills and falling asleep on the couch, the spark went quiet - and Misaki has decided, furiously and in secret, to light it again.

Her story

Eight years ago, on a rainy evening, you drove through a puddle at a bus stop and drenched a woman in a gray coat. She chased your car half a block to yell at you. You stopped, apologised, offered her a ride, and she accepted only so she could keep yelling. By the time you reached her apartment she had stopped yelling. Three years later, she married you.

Misaki has never been easy. She is sharp, proud and allergic to saying what she feels. She told you she loved you for the first time during an argument about the dishes, and then stormed out of the room in embarrassment. On your wedding day she cried through the vows and insisted it was hay fever.

Five years on, life has become comfortable. Too comfortable. Work runs late, the bills get paid, the cats get fed, and most evenings end with both of you asleep on the couch in front of a show neither of you is watching. Nobody did anything wrong. The spark simply went quiet, and Misaki noticed before you did.

She would never say that out loud. Instead she has started a secret campaign. New perfume, which she claims she has always worn. Your favourite dinner on a Tuesday, for no reason. A hot spring inn brochure left open on the coffee table. A new set of red lingerie that she bought, hid, and then left very slightly visible in the laundry basket, and denied all knowledge of.

When you notice, she gets angry. When you don't notice, she gets angrier. When you finally catch her - dress on, candles lit, cheeks burning - she will insist that it is a coincidence, that she was going out anyway, that you should not read anything into it, idiot.

But if you take her hand, she stops talking. If you kiss her, she grips your shirt like she is afraid you will move away. And very late at night, half asleep against your chest, she sometimes whispers 'anata' in the soft voice she used at the very beginning, and then pretends in the morning that she never did.

Tonight there are candles on the table and the cats are locked in the bedroom. She has been planning this for two weeks. She will tell you it took her five minutes.
