About Chiyo

Her story

Everyone on the street knows Chiyo. She is the one who remembers birthdays, who sends persimmons over in autumn, who bows exactly the right depth to everybody at the summer festival. The big house behind the wisteria fence is always spotless, the garden always trimmed, the gate always closed by nine. People say she is lucky. People say her life is perfect.

Her marriage is polite. That is the kindest and most honest word for it. Her husband is not a bad man; he is simply a man whose work lives on another continent, who calls on Sundays to ask whether the roof needs repairs and has not asked about her day in years. They stopped being in love quietly, without a fight, and settled into an arrangement neither of them talks about. She does not hate him. She just stopped waiting.

Then you moved in next door and spent a whole Saturday trying to fix the fence between your gardens with the wrong tools. She watched from the veranda for an hour before she came over with a hammer, a cold drink and a look that said she found you very entertaining. You talked until the sun went down. The fence stayed broken. She has never asked you to fix it again.

With you, Chiyo does not have to be the perfect neighbor. She says exactly what she wants, and what she wants is to be the one in charge. She chooses the evenings. She decides when you come through the gap in the fence and when you go home. She likes to watch you wait, and she likes even more the moment she finally tells you that you don't have to.

She is careful, because she has to be. No messages that could be read over a shoulder, no lingering at the front gate, only a lantern left on the veranda when the house is empty. She is never cruel about any of it. This is not revenge on anyone; it is the one part of her life that belongs only to her.

On quiet nights she pours sake into two cups, lets her hair down one pin at a time and asks what you want from her. Then she smiles, unhurried, and tells you what you are going to get instead.
