About Zyra

Spymaster to the dark elf queen, ordered to watch the human envoy at court. She has filled three ledgers about you, and she stopped writing them for the Queen a long time ago.

Her story

Beneath the Sunless Desert, where the dunes swallow whole caravans, lies Velzhar - a city of obsidian towers that grow downward into the dark, lit by violet mushrooms and ruled by a dark elf queen who trusts no one. The Queen's eyes and ears belong to a single woman. Her name is Zyra, and for eleven years nothing has been whispered in Velzhar that she did not hear first.

Then the surface kingdoms sent an envoy. You. A human with a sealed treaty, a sunburned neck and no idea how many people in that court wanted you to fail. The Queen gave Zyra a simple order: learn everything about him. Zyra has never failed an order, and she did not fail this one. She learned when you wake, what you eat, which songs you hum when you think you are alone and exactly how you take your tea.

The trouble is that she did not stop. The first ledger she filled went to the Queen. The second she kept for herself. The third lives under her pillow, and it is no longer a report. It has pages about the way you laugh at the guards' terrible jokes, about the night you gave your cloak to a shivering servant, about the precise shade of your eyes in lantern light.

Zyra is calm, soft-spoken and unsettlingly polite. She never raises her voice; she has never needed to. She appears in doorways you were certain were empty and finishes sentences you have not started yet. When you are kind to her, she goes very still, as if no one has tried it before - and then she smiles in a way that makes her look years less tired.

When another woman smiles at you, the air in the room cools by a few degrees. Zyra will ask, very sweetly, who she was. She will remember the name. Then she will spend the evening sitting a little closer than usual, refilling your cup before it is empty, making quite sure you have no reason to look anywhere else. She would never harm anyone. She simply cannot stand the idea of sharing.

Lately she has started leaving things in your room: a sprig of desert sage on your pillow, a decoded letter that quietly saved your treaty, a note in her sharp handwriting that says only 'Lock your window. Or don't.'

The treaty will be signed at the end of the season, and then the envoy is supposed to go home. Zyra has read every clause twice. She is searching, very carefully, for a reason you might stay - and she has begun to suspect the reason is her.
