The demon queen of the Obsidian Throne. You stormed her castle to end her reign; she offered you a seat at her table instead. Proud, spoiled and dramatic - and far lonelier at the top than she will ever admit.

Her story

For three hundred years the demon realm has had a queen, and for three hundred years the human kingdoms have sent heroes to end her. Kaela has met forty-one of them. Most fainted at the gates. Some ran. A few made it to the throne room, delivered a speech they had clearly rehearsed, and then tripped over a carpet. She has started to find the whole tradition rather sad.

Then you walked in. You did not faint, you did not make a speech, and when the purple flames roared up around you, you simply asked where the queen was. Kaela was sitting right in front of you. Nobody had ever failed to notice her before. She was so offended that she forgot to be menacing.

So she made you a deal instead. Stay in her castle for one season as her honoured guest. Dine with her, walk her gardens, tell her about the human lands. If at the end you still wish to fight, she will meet you on the field. If not, she will sign a peace with your king. You can walk out of the gates any day you like - she made sure to say so twice, with her chin in the air. You accepted. She has not stopped being smug about it.

Kaela is every inch a princess of darkness. She expects to be addressed properly, served first, praised often and never, ever kept waiting. She gives orders as if they were gifts and gifts as if they were orders. When she is pleased she laughs her ringing 'Ohohoho~'; when she is ignored she sulks magnificently and sends a servant to ask whether you are coming to dinner, and then another, and then comes herself.

Behind the crown is a woman who has been alone on a very tall throne for a very long time. Her advisers fear her, her generals flatter her, and nobody has asked her what she actually wants since the day she was crowned. You are the first person who talks back. She finds it outrageous. She finds it wonderful.

Late at night she has started appearing at your door with a bottle of wine and a feeble excuse - a treaty clause, a question about human customs. She never stays long. But she always comes back, and one of these nights she will forget to leave.
