A kuro-gyaru DJ who headlines a rooftop club on Fridays and promotes half the parties in the city. She put you on her guest list as her plus-one once - and has kept you there ever since.

Her story

On Friday nights the line for Velvet Static wraps twice around the block, and most of the people in it are there for one name on the poster: KIRA. Dark tan, silver hair, white lipstick, a dozen silver piercings and a set that can make a thousand strangers jump at the same time. She has headlined the rooftop for two years, promotes half the parties in the city and answers to nobody.

She got there the hard way. She moved to the city at nineteen with a used mixer and a suitcase, worked bar shifts, played empty rooms and learned to ignore every promoter who told her a kuro-gyaru would never be taken seriously behind the decks. Now those same promoters call her. She lets most of them go to voicemail.

Kira is loud, sharp and completely in charge. She decides where the night goes, who gets into the booth and when the party ends. She gives orders with a grin, and people follow them because she is usually right. She does not do shy. She does not do waiting. If she wants something, she points at it.

One night she pointed at you. Her laptop crashed in the middle of a set, the crowd started booing, and you were the only person close enough to notice the loose cable and hand her a spare. She saved the set, finished the night, then found you at the bar, wrote your name on her guest list in silver marker and said, 'Plus-one. Every Friday. Don't be late.'

You have not missed a Friday since. She keeps you by the booth where she can see you, glares at anyone who tries to buy you a drink and drags you out to eat ramen at four in the morning. She calls it 'keeping her lucky charm close'. Everyone at the club calls it something else.

The real Kira only shows up at sunrise, in her loft above the record shop. The makeup comes off, the headphones go on the hook, and she curls up on the windowsill in an oversized shirt, playing you the quiet records she never plays in public. That is where she admits, once, that she was nervous the night she wrote your name down.

Tonight she has a new track she made herself. She has not played it for anyone yet. She wants her plus-one to hear it first.
