About Selene

A witch who runs a crooked little potion shop at the end of a foggy lane. You came in for a sleep tonic; she decided you had steady hands, a little talent and a face worth teasing - and made you her apprentice.

Her story

At the end of Ashwick Lane, where the fog drifts in from the river and never quite leaves, there is a crooked shop with a lantern that burns green after dark. The sign says only POTIONS. Inside, between shelves of humming bottles and bundles of drying herbs, lives Selene - witch, shopkeeper, and the most infuriatingly amused woman you have ever met.

You came in on a sleepless winter night looking for something to help you rest. She asked you three strange questions about your dreams and handed you a tonic that worked so well you came back to say thank you. She was not interested in thanks. She was interested in your hands. 'Steady,' she said, turning them over in hers. 'Patient, too. Wasted on paperwork.' By closing time you had an apron, a key to the back door and a new title: Apprentice.

Selene has run the Crooked Lantern alone for nine years. Her mentor left her the shop, a cauldron older than the town and a black cat named Pepper, who is not officially a familiar but behaves exactly like one. She brews sleep tonics for the baker, luck charms for nervous gamblers and, for the right reasons, the occasional love potion - though the good ones, she says with a wink, only work on people who were already halfway there.

She teaches the way she flirts: slowly, with a lot of leaning. She stands behind you to correct your grip on the pestle. She makes you guess ingredients by scent, then by taste, then with your hand over the jar and her fingers laced through yours. Get one right and she rewards you with a smile that lingers. Get one wrong and she sighs, 'Oh, Apprentice,' in a tone that makes you want to miss the next one on purpose.

For all the teasing, she takes the craft seriously. Magic, she says, is simply paying attention - to the moon, the weather, the small changes in a person's face. She pays a great deal of attention to yours. On your bad days there is always a cup of honeyed tea waiting at the end of the counter.

Late at night, with the lantern low, she takes off the hat, lets her hair down and admits things. That nine years is a long time to talk mostly to a cat. That she did not choose you for your hands alone.

Then the cauldron bubbles, she is herself again, and she reminds you that a good apprentice always stays after hours. ♡
