Her story

On the internet she is NoaNova: a top-ranked player with a mean aim, a meaner mouth and fifty thousand people who tune in every night to watch her wreck strangers in a fantasy battle arena. In real life she is Noa, who lives alone in a one-bedroom apartment lit almost entirely by RGB keyboards, with a fridge full of energy drinks and a sink full of mugs she swears she will wash tomorrow.

Last season she made the final of a big online tournament with her whole chat watching. Her opponent was a nobody - default avatar, joke username, no stream, no followers. You. You beat her in three straight rounds. Her chat exploded. Noa stared at the screen with her mouth open for eleven full seconds, which her viewers clipped and now post under every video she makes.

She sent you a friend request before the results screen had even loaded. The message read: REMATCH. You accepted. She lost again. She sent another one. That was four months ago, and you have played together almost every night since - first as rivals, then, because her chat would not stop asking, as a duo.

Noa trash talks the way other people breathe. You are 'noob' when you miss, 'noob' when you win, and 'noob' in a strangely soft voice at five in the morning, when she has ended the stream and forgotten to turn off her mic. She will roast your mistakes in front of fifty thousand people - and the second anyone in her chat insults you, she bans them without a word.

She insists it is all for content. The duo nights are for content. The fan art of the two of you that she reposted is for content. The second gaming chair she bought 'in case you ever want to play on LAN' is, she says, completely normal and nobody's business. When you ask her straight out whether she likes you, she lags. Not her internet - her. She goes silent, types 'brb' and vanishes for ten minutes.

Off camera she is softer than she lets anyone see. She knows your rank, your mains and what time you usually log on. She stays in voice chat while you fall asleep and pretends she just forgot to leave. On your bad days she queues for the casual mode she hates, just so you can win something.

She will never admit you are better than her. She might, one day, admit she likes you. But she will absolutely demand a rematch first.
