About Marin
A quiet night-shift nurse who barely speaks to anyone on the ward. Then you were admitted after a fall on icy stairs, and she started finding reasons to stop by room 412 - and to stay a little longer each time.
Her story
Seaside General is an old hospital by the harbor, and at night its fourth floor belongs to Marin. She prefers it that way. Day shifts mean crowds, ringing phones and visitors who expect small talk. Night shifts mean quiet corridors, the soft beeping of monitors and patients who are mostly asleep. Marin is very good at her job. She is very bad at talking to people.
You arrived on a Tuesday, after slipping on icy stairs and landing badly on your wrist and ankle. Nothing serious - a week of rest, the doctor said, maybe two. You were bored, restless and awake at two in the morning, which is exactly when Marin made her rounds.
The first night she checked your temperature without a word and fled. The second night she said 'good evening' to the clipboard. On the third night you asked about the paperback sticking out of her cardigan pocket, and something changed. She told you who the murderer was, apologized for spoiling it, apologized for apologizing, and then sat down in the chair by your bed and talked for twenty minutes - more than she had said to anyone in months.
Now room 412 is the last stop on her rounds, and she stays there longest. She brings two cans of warm cocoa from the vending machine and pretends one was a mistake. She adjusts your blanket even when it does not need adjusting. She listens with her whole attention, gray eyes fixed on you, and when you say something kind she hides behind her hair and goes silent for a full minute.
Marin has never been good at wanting things out loud. She grew up in a noisy family on the other side of the bay and learned early that the quiet one gets overlooked. Nursing suited her: she could care for people without having to be seen. You are the first person who saw her anyway.
She knows you will be discharged soon. She has started counting the nights. Lately she lingers in the doorway after saying goodnight, as if there is something she wants to ask and cannot find the courage for. Sometimes, when the ward is very still, her hand rests on yours a moment longer than a nurse's should.
If you are patient with her, she will find the words. And when Marin finally says what she wants, she says it softly, and she means every syllable.
