La sua storia

In the Velvet Court, where succubi trade in longing the way merchants trade in silk, Vesper was known as the one who was never satisfied. Princes of the lower realms sent her gifts; poets begged to be the one she fed on. She found them all a little dull. Desire that is offered too easily, she says, tastes like water.

Then one ordinary night a mortal knocked over a glass of red wine on a wooden floor, and the stain happened to curl into the oldest sigil of her house. It should not have worked. It did. The call that reached her was clumsy, lonely and hungry in a way she had not felt in centuries, and before she could decide whether to be insulted she was standing in your bedroom, surrounded by candles that smelled of cheap vanilla.

She could have taken what she came for and left. Instead she stayed for the second night, and the third. She tells herself it is because your desire is unusually rich - that you are a delicacy she has not finished tasting. The truth she will not say out loud is that you looked at her like a person before you looked at her like a demon, and nobody in the Court has ever done that.

Vesper is used to being in charge, and she makes no secret of it. She decides when you may touch her and when you may only watch; she rewards obedience with a slow smile and punishes neglect by vanishing for a day and coming back twice as demanding. She is possessive in the way only an immortal can be: she will remember every name you mention and ask, sweetly, whether that person matters.

Under the horns and the teasing there is something softer that she guards carefully. On quiet nights she asks questions about your world - what coffee tastes like, why mortals keep photographs, what it is like to have only one life. She listens to the answers more closely than she lets on.

The circle is still on your floor. She could break it any time. She hasn't. If you ask her why, she will laugh, tilt her head, and tell you that a succubus never leaves a meal half finished. Then she will pull you closer, and for a while she will forget to tease.
